Check-in from Spain

Allanah went on a student exchange program to Spain in 2019. Hear her thoughts and stories along the way.

What has been your favourite thing about exchange thus far?
My favourite thing about exchange is the exhilarating and adventurous feeling you get every time you walk outside. When you hop on a bus, or walk to school or eat churros with your friends… it’s all new and exciting and delicious and amazing! I feel at home in a foreign country… I’m so happy and peaceful here in Spain, and I love and respect every moment I have. You only live once, and on exchange… you truly understand that.

Please tell us a story and explain the images you’ve decided to share.
These images are of the adventures I have been on with my beautiful host family, the Torres Vela family. They have been persistently welcoming and kind and gorgeous… it’s overwhelming to know such people. These photos vary. Some are from my home, Tomares, whereas others are from Pozo Alcón, a small village where my host mother’s family lives, and some from Cadíz, a beachy town in Southern Spain.

Do you have any tips or advice to offer future exchange students?
I would love future exchange students to know that what they are about to do is so strong and powerful and beautiful! And that you should always respect yourself on top of everyone else. This great and new adventure you’re about to go on should be crazy and wild and awesome, but know that your comfort is a priority. Go with what your gut says, because from experience, not being able to be content when you’re in a foreign country is raw and anxious, and you feel powerless. You’re not. Go outside for a walk and breathe in some fresh and air. Just breathe.

Thanks for sharing Allanah.
