Southern Cross Cultural Exchange has opened applications for the Global Explorer Scholarship: the largest award offered to Australian high school students, and one of the few ways a life-changing student exchange year becomes possible regardless of a family’s income.
What‘s on offer: One national scholarship worth $15,000 covers an entire academic year exchange, including program fees, flights within the allocated budget, and travel insurance. Thirty further awards of $5,000 discounts are available to students in Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania, applied as a discount on Academic Year programs. Destinations include France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Austria and the USA.
More than a trip. Recipients join the Global Explorer program and complete six structured missions during their exchange: acts of kindness, monthly video reflections, cultural exchange tasks, 20 hours of community service, active social participation, and learning a new skill. Students return with a medal, a certificate and reference letter, career coaching, and a digital record of the year.

About the scholarship
The Global Explorer Scholarship is the largest award Southern Cross Cultural Exchange offers to Australian high school students. The national scholarship of $15,000 funds a full academic year abroad, covering program fees, flights within the allocated budget and travel insurance.
Recipients live with a carefully screened volunteer host family and attend a local high school in France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Austria or the United States.
Six missions, not just a holiday
Winners complete six structured missions during their exchange: acts of kindness, monthly video reflections, cultural exchange tasks, 20 hours of community service, active social participation and learning a new skill. They return with a medal, a certificate and reference letter, career coaching and a digital record of the year, all of which strengthen university and job applications.
Why schools promote it
An all-inclusive Academic Year High School student exchange program is one of the few opportunities that reaches students regardless of family income, and that’s only possible because schools like yours choose to make room for it. Who can apply?
Australian students aged 14 to 17 at the time of application, enrolled at a secondary school and available to travel in August or September 2027.
What does the scholarship cover?
Program fees, flights within the allocated budget, and travel insurance for a full academic year exchange. It does not cover visa or passport costs, flight surcharges or personal expenses.
When do applications close?
31 January 2027, for August and September 2027 departures.
Can our school use these assets for free?
Yes. Use them in newsletters, on noticeboards, on your intranet and on social media. Please do not crop the SCCE logo or change the colours, and link every mention to the scholarship page.
