The amount of time every individual exchange student has available and is comfortable with for their student exchange program is different. You may only have your summer break to experience your world, or you may be really keen to immerse yourself in a brand new culture for an entire year. SCCE offers numerous program lengths to suit each individual’s needs including Academic Year Programs, Semester Programs and Short Term Programs.

Academic Year SCCE Student Exchange Programs
There is no doubt about it, if you want to get the absolute most out of your exchange experience, going for the full academic year is your best option. The program will range from 10-11 months and the departure date will depend on your destination country. Edie went to Italy for a year and returned fluent in Italian saying,
“My last day of school was filled with so many mixed emotions; happy to be heading home but ultimately very sad to be saying goodbye after so many amazing memories. I’ve since realised that saying goodbye isn’t really ‘goodbye’ but just a ‘see you soon’, as I will definitely be back and so many of my new friends want to come to Australia to visit me.
This experience has taught me that no matter how different we are, we can always find common ground. I’ll never forget this experience and I’ll never forget all of the amazing people I got to meet along the way. Thank you so much for making this possible for me. It’s been amazing”.
Academic Semester SCCE Student Exchange Programs
Going overseas for a semester can mean a duration of 4 – 6 months, depending on your destination. The vast majority of our semester students feel as though they’ve truly become a local, a classmate, a family member and more. Grace definitely made the most of her time in the United Kingdom,
“I have met so many amazing people and not just from the UK. I have befriended other exchange students from places like Norway, Finland and Italy which has been so interesting. It has given me a wider perspective of the world and I have been able to travel so much of the country.
I got the opportunity to go on a trip to Europe with my school. Driving through the English, Dutch, French and Belgian countrysides on a bus full of new friends was so much fun. Seeing the Eiffel Tower light up at night was truly spectacular. This new found independence (I’ve gained) has allowed me to develop socially and improve my coping skills. I had always dreamt about going to Paris and I feel so grateful that I was able to visit”.
SCCE Short Term Programs
Not everyone has a full year available to experience their world, but there is still a lot you can see and do in a shorter amount of time. Our shorter programs are 6 weeks, 2 months, 2.5 month and 3 months in duration and can take you to many destinations around the world. Our short term programs are typically scheduled for an end-of-year departure, often meaning you only miss the summer break or final term of your New Zealand education.
Taylor spent 2 months in Japan and both enjoyed her time in school, learnt so much more about the language and gentle culture of the Japanese, and still had time to explore:
I went to a temple called the ryotanji temple with my host mother and one of my host sisters Shiori. The temple was famous because a drama based in my city Hamamatsu was filmed there and because it was autumn all the trees were super beautiful, so I got to take lots of amazing photos”.
