Southern Cross Cultural Exchange is often asked to attend high school career expos. This is because applicants who prove they have been on a student exchange program showcase numerous qualities that are very attractive to both future employers and university admission officers.
Student exchange experiences can also prove to be very useful for your final ATAR…

“I am studying ATAR Japanese and after coming back from my 2 month student exchange program I am topping my class, averaging 94%.  Compare that to last year prior to my exchange when I was in Year 11, where I finished with an average of about 75%!!  My 2 months abroad has significantly improved my Japanese”.

There are numerous ways a student exchange program prove you exude the qualities both employers and university admission officers are looking for:

  1. POSITIVE ATTITUDE – It takes a very positive attitude to live with a new family, abide by their rules, and learn an entirely new way of life while making friends on the other side of the world.  Exchange students with the most positive attitudes always have the best programs!
  2. PASSION FOR LEARNING – Going on an exchange program absolutely portrays your passion on many levels.  It may be a passion for learning another language.  It may be a passion for learning about another culture.  It may be a passion for travel.  It may be all of the above!  No matter where your passion lies, a student exchange program is taking that passion to the ultimate level!
  3. INDEPENDENCE – The #1 quality successfully completing a high school student exchange program showcases is independence.  It takes a brave and independent person to leave home, live with another family and successfully accept a new way of life.  Especially as a high school student!  Successfully completing an exchange program, especially while learning and perfecting another language, will showcase this more than anything else.
  4. PERSEVERENCE – Student exchange does not come without its challenges.  Each individual who completes a student exchange program, regardless if it’s for 6 weeks or a full academic year, shows resilience and the utmost ability to persevere to complete the program.
  5. INQUISITIVE – How can travelling the world as a teenager NOT showcase your inquisitive nature?!?  There are many people in this world who talk about what they want to do… travel, study, perfect another language… a student exchange program under your belt showcases that you are someone who does something about it!
  6. GOOD WRITTEN ENGLISH – Correct grammar and the ability to write fluently and correctly is definitely an asset.  Living and studying overseas will give you an appreciation for your own language and way of learning, as you will most likely find that your fellow overseas students will want to learn from you!  Especially when you go to a destination that speaks in another language.  In addition to this, you must have decent grades in all subjects in order to be accepted onto an exchange program, which will reflect on successfully completing the program.
  7. ABILITY TO WORK IN GROUPS – This is, again, an asset to take you through life – regardless if that is going into university or straight into the workforce.  Being a successful exchange student shows that you can not only work well with others, but you can also work well with different cultures.  The ultimate mission of student exchange is to create better global citizens – individuals who understand that people around the world have different ways of doing things, different beliefs, and the art of working well them is to understand them and respect their ways of doing things.
